What it costs to move the gear: racks, trains and hire (2027 update)
Moving touring gear costs add up through racks, train carriage, box fees, storage and hire, and the figures below show which line usually decides the trip.
Racks, trains and hire are three separate bills, and moving the gear can quietly double the cost of a weekend. A roof rack, a train carriage fee, a shop boxing service and a shuttle back to the car arrive together.
What to take away
- Transport and storage are a separate budget line from the gear itself.
- A roof rack runs about $150 to $600; a hitch platform rack $300 to $900, plus $200 to $500 fitted for the hitch.
- Amtrak charges $20 for a boxed bicycle and $5 to $10 for roll-on where offered, and both need a reservation.
- A bike shop will box a bicycle for roughly $50 to $75, and a hotel that stores it indoors charges nothing.
- Hauling an electric bicycle somewhere that will not permit its class is an expensive mistake, and the rules are published.
Check the rules before you load the car
Motor assistance is the category most likely to be refused at the far end. The National Park Service announced its e-bike policy in August 2019, following Secretary's Order 3376.
E-bike allowed?
Is the trail federal park land?
NPS policy applies; check Superintendent rules
Local manager rules apply; confirm before racking
The order allows e-bikes on park roads, paved or hardened trails, off-road motor vehicle areas, and administrative roads open to traditional bicycles. Designated wilderness stays closed to them.
Superintendents keep the right to limit, restrict or impose conditions on bicycles and e-bikes. The motor may only assist pedal propulsion, except where the route is open to public motor vehicle traffic.
Local managers set their own rules on non-federal corridors, and those rules differ. Confirm before the bicycle goes on the rack, not after.

Roof hardware is where the first real money goes. Thule and Yakima sell roof systems that need a vehicle-specific fit kit, usually $50 to $150 on its own.
Kuat's NV 2.0 and Hollywood Racks' Sport Rider are hitch platform racks rated for electric bicycles. Both sit at the top of that price range and need a class 2 hitch or better.
Saris and Allen Sports make trunk-strap racks that start far lower, typically $60 to $200. They suit one bicycle on a short drive, not a loaded touring setup.
Two lines decide most trips. A rack plus a hitch fitting is $500 to $1,400 before the bicycle leaves the driveway, which is five to fifteen days of hire.
On a one-way corridor, the shuttle back surprises people, because it is priced per person and the car sits at the other end.
Amtrak is the largest carrier that takes bicycles, and its two methods price differently. A boxed bicycle is $20; roll-on service, offered on many corridors, is $5 to $10. Both need a reservation made at booking.
Commuter operators run their own rules and their own fees. Metra in Chicago and Caltrain in the Bay Area carry bicycles in designated cars at no extra charge, with weekday peak restrictions on some services. Confirm the limits with the operator before you buy a ticket.
Hire is a real option
Bringing your own bicycle is not automatically cheaper. Some corridors have a dense local supply.
Hire vs bring your own
Hire
- Daily cost
- $40 to $90
- Bikeshare pass
- $15 to $25
- Availability
- Dense in some corridors
- Theft risk
- Lower
Bring your own
- Daily cost
- Rack + fuel + risk

- Always available
- Theft risk
- Higher
FHWA's separated bike lane guide, describing where separated facilities get built, records that the Indianapolis Cultural Trail opened in 2013 with 8 miles of physically separated bicycle facilities. Those connect 82 miles of on-street bike lanes and more than 70 miles of off-street greenway trails, alongside a bikeshare of 250 bicycles.
That system is Pacers Bikeshare. Bikeshare day passes in most US cities typically run $15 to $25, against $40 to $90 a day for a shop rental.
Where that density exists, a weekend on hired bicycles can cost less than fuel plus a rack plus the risk of theft. Where it does not, the nearest hire may be forty miles from the trailhead.
Ask where the bicycle sleeps
The question that saves the most money is the least glamorous one: does the property have somewhere lockable indoors. A no turns into a second lock, a worse night's sleep, or a room upgrade. Ask before booking, and take the answer in writing.
The packing side of the same trip is in a rail trail packing list, and the booking order that keeps these costs predictable is in itinerary costs: booking order and tickets.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to ship a bicycle or fly with it?
It varies by carrier and season, and both need a box. Shop-shipped services such as BikeFlights typically run $60 to $150 within the continental US, and airline bicycle fees typically run $30 to $150 each way. Get both quotes for your exact dates before deciding.
Do trains carry bicycles?
Some services do, often with a reservation and a fee, and some require a box. The operator's own page is the only reliable answer.
Is bikeshare usable for a full day?
Sometimes, though many systems price short trips and penalize long ones. Daily caps typically run $15 to $25, so check the cap before planning around it.
What about insurance?
Home policies often cover a bicycle away from home only partially. A scheduled rider usually adds a few dollars a month. Read the limit before relying on it.
